The main aims of the English Department are to ensure all pupils enjoy the subject whilst developing the skills they require to become confident and competent users of English. To achieve these aims the department uses a syllabus that is linked to the National Curriculum requirements, yet with a flexibility to expand beyond them.
The English department recognises that English is vital for communicating with others in school and in the wider world, and is fundamental to learning in all curriculum subjects. The overall aim of the department is for pupils to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Skills that they will need to participate in society and employment. Pupils are taught to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others confidently and effectively. The department encourages pupils to become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama as well as non-fiction and media texts, gaining access to the pleasure and world of knowledge that reading offers. In units of work pupils look at the patterns, structures, origins and conventions of English which helps them understand how language works. Using this understanding, pupils are encouraged to choose and adapt what they say and write in different situations, as well as appreciate and interpret the choices made by other writers and speakers.

English as an Additional Language
At all key stages EAL pupils are initially assessed by the EAL coordinator. Those in the early stages of learning English (Step 1 to Level 2) secure targeted intervention. At KS3 this usually takes the form of regular in-class support from an EAL teacher or one of the EAL teaching assistants. These students can also be withdrawn for EAL induction lessons on a weekly basis and for individual monitoring of progress as appropriate.
In years 10 and 11 EAL pupils receive support with controlled assessments and help with their exam preparation. New arrivals can select an EAL option lesson where targeted intervention is provided.
Examinations
A680F Information and Ideas Exam.
Pupils can redo the exam in May and take their best mark forward.
We should get a breakdown of results from the January exam, which will help guide our teaching towards the exam, again, in May.
There will be revision sessions available in the run up to the exam and you will receive a letter shortly highlighting which sessions your son should attend.
If you have any concerns about your son completing this exam then please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Ovenden in the English Department.
