Oliver! The musical
Coombe Boys’ School produced an all-singing, all-dancing whole school production at the end of last term.
Lionel Bart’s musical of the famous Dickens’ novel was brought to life under the careful direction of Miss O’Reilly, Head of English, Drama and Media. Not only did she direct it but she also starred in it as the lead female role of Nancy!
The play was performed to the public in the sports’ hall for two evenings on December 14th and 15th . As well as the public performances, Year 6’s from local schools were invited to visit Coombe Boys’ School for a special matinee.
Under the new headship of Ms Carol Campbell, Beverley has become Coombe Boys’ School and aims to rejuvenate the historical success of the school.
The vast cast of boys from years 7 –11, aided by post-16 students from Coombe, teaching and non-teaching staff (even the Chair of the Governors made a guest appearance!) brought Victorian London to life on an impressive set.
The new Head of Music, Mr Welsh had spent 4 months with the cast practising their singing, whilst a bold 6th former from Coombe Girls, Amy McVickers, took up the challenge of teaching the boys and staff how to dance.
A new acting talent was identified in Year 7 as George Hood had no sooner started at the school when he found himself as Oliver. He melted the audience’s heart when he sang his solo: ‘where is love’. He was joined by a talented Year 11, Josh Diffley, who played the infamous Artful Dodger with skill.
Sam Reddin also in Year 11, who had impressed audiences with his portrayal of Scrooge the year before, exchanged one old miser for another and stole the show with his interpretation of Fagin.
The hard work from everyone involved paid off as all three shows went smoothly.
