2016 Poppy Appeal
Coombe Boys School have supported The Royal British Legion for four years.
The Royal British Legion was formed in 1921, bringing together four national organisations of ex-servicemen that had established themselves after the First World War. A century on they still help Service men and women, veterans, and their families in almost every aspect of daily life.
Every year it is a pleasure to support the Malden and Coombe Branch at New Malden train station. It is an extra early morning for the students with a 7am start and sometimes standing outside in the cold weather, but our students’ commitment never lets us down. This year it was fantastic to have over 20 students volunteer, over the two weeks, to raise money for the Charity by selling the poppies.
On Friday 11th were fortunate to have Mr Ken Smith from the Malden and Coombe Branch join us for the whole school assembly to educate our pupils about The Royal British Legion and where the money raised goes to. At the end of the assembly we were proud and honored to receive a certificate of recognition for our continued support and participation in the Poppy Appeal. Later that day our pupils held the two minutes silence to pay respect and remember those who have lost their lives in conflict. At both the assembly and New Malden War Memorial Michael Cottom performed the Last Post.
The commitment from pupils continued on the Sunday when many pupils marked Remembrance by participating in the Malden and Coombe parade and service. It was a pleasure to be part of the parade and a special honor to be chosen to lay a poppy wreath from The Coombe Schools. We thoroughly enjoyed the service and hymns to remember those that have lost their lives for us.
A new event that we were able to attend this year was The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. Students that offered their time from selling poppies at New Malden Train Station were invited to the annual Festival that commemorates and honours all those who have lost their lives in conflicts. We were so proud that we were able to attend the festival and watch the many different Armed Forces pay respect to their fallen comrades, hear stories from families that had been affected and join in with songs that were accompanied by the amazing military bands.
Coombe Boys’ School are very proud to attend and volunteer their time to help support The Royal British Legion and we will be back again next year!
