Drama Department

Drama is a thriving and popular subject at Coombe Boys’ school both as an academic option and as an extracurricular activity. The Drama Department has a reputation for creating high quality performance work whilst generating an ethos of inclusion and an environment in which anything is possible!

The Drama Department currently teaches two lessons a week to all Year 7, 8 & 9 classes, offers the very popular AQA GCSE Drama course at KS4, which continues to achieve excellent results and the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Acting at KS5.

The Drama department fully believes that direct engagement in drama is essential as part of an arts-rich curriculum that every pupil has a right to experience. Through Drama pupils become familiar with the culture and conventions of theatre and learn to exercise critical judgement when making, performing and responding to drama of all kinds.

Drama at Coombe Boys’ School is intended to offer all pupils an opportunity to unlock the use of imagination, intellect, empathy and courage. The Drama curriculum allows pupils, through engagement in drama, to apply their imaginations and draw upon their own personal experiences.

In addition, principles of communication, concentration and co-operation are encouraged and opportunities for participation in whole school performing arts events and future Arts opportunities are encouraged.

The Department offers a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities, which vary, from Whole School Productions, GCSE/BTEC Exam Showcases, Shakespeare Schools Festival entries, National Theatre Connections Festival entries, International Youth Arts Festival entries and Lower School Drama clubs. The Department also work closely with the Parents and Friends Association supporting the fundraising efforts wherever possible and running the hugely popular, termly Family Theatre Trips. Pupils are also given regularly opportunities to attend live theatre events both locally and in London. TIE companies annually bring performance work into the Department and established theatre practitioners offer a range of extra-curricular opportunities, one of the most popular being the Swordplay and Stage-Combat Master-classes.
