Coombes Boys School

Best ever GCSE and Post 16 Results!

Building on a consistently strong and steady upward trend in academic performance, Coombe Boys’ School students and and staff are once again celebrating a year of excellent GCSE results.

We are delighted to report that for the summer examinations in 2018 students coped admirably with the challenges presented by new courses at GCSE level and post 16 and recorded the highest ever attainment at both key stages. We are especially pleased with boys performance in Mathematics, English and Science at both GCSE and A’ level.

Our Mathematics results continue to be exceptional with 11% of our students, again, achieving a grade ‘9’ (A**). This is over three times the national average for boys and over four times the national average for girls.  Over 9% of students who studied History, in the first year of the new course, achieved a grade ‘9’ - almost three times the national average for boys.

These excellent results reflect the school’s accreditation with the NACE award (National Association of Able Children in Education) and demonstrates the expertise that has been developed within the school to provide the appropriate level of challenge and support for these talented learners.

At GCSE the overall 5 A*-C including English and Maths percentage was up again (11% increase in 2 years) and the grade 9 - 4 (A* –C: standard pass) results for English were 76%, which represented a 17% improvement on 2016.  The grade 9 – 5 success rate in Mathematics and English Language was 67% and 63% respectively.  Progress 8 and Attainment 8 scores currently stand as +0.24 and 48.9.

Students taking the EBACC combination of subjects (35%) have seen a dramatic increase in their levels of progress with over half achieving strong passes or better in all contributing subjects.  The school’s overall results remain significantly above the national average and we were delighted to see many boys sweet the board with straight A** (9), A* (8) and A (7) grades.

We are proud of all our students many successes. It is wonderful to have this confirmation of the outstanding work undertaken by staff and students at the school. The trend set at Post 16 has been replicated in the GCSE results with high numbers of students achieving the top grades and students performing exceptionally well in Mathematics and Physics. It is fantastic to see so many of our talented and highly-motivated boys in such a strong position to be successful in the next stage of their academic careers at the Coombe Sixth Form. We recognise these results continue to lay a firm foundation for the school’s future.

Our KS3 results continue to be strong and courses are proving to prepare students for their GCSE courses well.  We look forward to even better achievements next year as the new courses become further embedded and enhanced in the future.

Students achieved above national average results for boys in all subjects and most notably in Mathematics, Computer Science and English Literature. We are proud of the increase in the overall 5 GCSE’s (9-4) including English and Mathematics results. Most importantly for us the progress that students made from entry to when they left has improved significantly with groups of learners making above expected progress.

Year 13 Sixth Form Results

Coombe Sixth Form is delighted to report another superb year of examination success at both A’ level & Level 3 vocational BTEC.

The 2018 Year 13 students have continued the Sixth Form’s fantastic academic tradition despite the challenge of the new specifications and more challenging standards. We are proud of all our students for achieving these excellent grades and are now able to progress to the university course of their choice.

The dedication of the students, staff and their families has resulted in the highest ever proportion of A*- C grades with a third of all entries graded A* or A and an array of Coombe graduates achieving these highest grades in each of their A Level subjects as well as the Applied Science BTEC course.

Each year, Coombe Sixth Formers achieve consistently outstanding results across all subjects and we couldn’t be more proud of them.

Director of Coombe Sixth Form, Ms Emily Barns, commented,

"I would like to congratulate everyone on their results. I am immensely proud to see such fantastic grades achieved by the Sixth Form once again. It is marvellous that the hard work and commitment of students have been rewarded with such exceptional outcomes across all subjects at Coombe.

It is particularly pleasing that, despite the many media reports concerning girls’ attainment in physics at A’ Level this summer, Coombe Sixth Form girls have bucked this national trend and excelled in their attainment in both maths and physics.

Once again, our Level 3 vocational BTEC students have maintained the exceptional Coombe attainment record in these qualifications with over 60% achieving the equivalent of A*/A.

All students have worked tremendously hard and I wish them the very best of luck in their future endeavours. A huge thank you must also go to all staff at Coombe Sixth Form who work tirelessly to ensure every student reaches his or her potential. Very well done to all!"
